Notes:
A
Night on Blue Jay Way is the Richard Glaser Trio’s
second seminal recording in three years. Like most great things,
it was born from a constant flux of action, inaction and unparalleled
bursts of creativity. The result, of course, is another remarkable
collection of music by three outstanding Los Angeles-based musicians,
songwriter/pianist Richard Glaser, bassist Miguel Sawaya and
drummer Mark San Filippo, three artists who have dedicated the
best of themselves to the culture and love of jazz music.
Since
their last self-titled record, the band's path has led them
to Blue Jay Way, the legendary hilltop quarter and well-remembered
namesake of Harrision’s Beatles hit. Captured in the grand
living room of a Hollywood Hills home, the stark difference
between A Night on Blue Jay Way and studio-built albums
is crystal clear the moment Richie’s hands hit the Steinway.
For a band that has grown greatly in a short time and that continues
to evolve with each passing performance, the album swells with
the rich colors and warm sophistication of the trio’s
matured sound. In its wake, it leaves a lasting impression on
new and long-time listeners alike.
Just
like Ornette Coleman who taught himself and others to love the
math of music, the Richard Glaser Trio teaches others to love
the beauty of finely layered arrangements and improvisation-infused
melancholy. Discover the brilliant late hop to the sweet, slow
ballad "I’ll Be Fine” or drop deep into the
open-ended ocean of “My Dream Is,” the song without
time, and you will understand the importance of a band like
the Richard Glaser Trio to the Los Angeles jazz scene. Some
songs, like wine, tastes, and people, develop over time. Trio
classics like “It’s Inspiring,” a church song
for jazz believers and “That’s Okay,” a blues-tinged
song inspired by a children’s book and “Royal Presence,”
a beat-tunneling powered by Sawaya’s bass line, are re-envisioned
and re-born on this album.
A
Night on Blue Jay Way is the Richard Glaser Trio at their
best – a band of singular Los Angeles musicians compelled
to distinguish themselves through original, honed, straight-ahead
jazz. Utterly out of sync in a city long grown accustomed to
artificial beauty, the band is the real deal – an exceptional
trio of artists coming into their own through their own particular
way.
